Research on "The Issue of Gender-Based Violence as Presented by Armenian Mass Media"

Mass media is a powerful socializing agent affecting “what” and “how” we learn about the world. It plays a significant role in shaping and transforming social stereotypes, promoting certain social behavior patterns and values.

With a purpose to evaluate the extent and quality of Mass media's coverage of GBV and GBV combating issues in Armenia (quality of publications, quantity, attitude, and scope/size), a prominent local journalistic NGO, “ProMedia-Gender” that unites journalists from print and electronic media, experts and academic staff specializing in the field of gender journalism was selected to carry out media content analysis.

Members of “ProMedia-Gender” have experience in the field of conducting education meetings and trainings for journalists, organizing educational courses and vocational trainings in the fields of professional, investigative, political and gender journalism, as well as possess necessary skills and know-how for conducting monitoring of mass media and researches in the field of gender issues.

Under the overall supervision of UNFPA and UNFPA-CGBV project “ProMedia-Gender” carried out content analysis of mass media coverage of GBV issues to answer the following:

-    How often and to what extent mass media address GBV issues?
-    In what context?
-    How mass media comment on the causes of GBV?
-    How often presentation of GBV issues is linked to the activities of UNFPA CGBV project?
-    Which of the analyzed periodicals addressed the topic of GBV more often?

Based on the results of the qualitative content analysis the following data was submitted to the project:

  • Statistics and dynamics of mentioning key definitions concerning GBV;
  • Classification of data as per ways of presenting;
