“Gender Dimension of Civic and Political Participation in Armenia” sociological study was conducted in October-December 2010 in cooperation with “Caucasus” Sociological Researches Centre”. The study was aimed at contributing to the formulation and implementation of the National gender policies and to strengthening of mechanisms that enhance women’s civic and political participation and promote their representation in power and decision-making.

The objectives were:
a)  To conduct a quantitative research with a purpose to explore comparative characteristics and dynamics of women’s and men’s participation in socio-political processes as well as to probe public opinion regarding the mentioned issues;
b) To reveal social, economic, political, educational, advocacy, moral and psychological as well as traditional, stereotypical, and other factors that promote or impede women’s full-pledged participation in the mentioned processes;
c)  To work out a set of measures for the relevant Government agencies and NGOs engaged in the formulation of gender policies to minimize the impact of factors that impede civic and political participation and would eventually eliminate those factors.

The study was conducted through a sample-based survey carried out in 10 communities of Yerevan, as well as in twelve town and thirty six rural communities of Armavir, Gegharkunik, Shirak, and Syunik marzes.

Analysis of the survey results consists of three parts:
Part 1: Analysis of general indicators and gender characteristics of interest, awareness and participation elements of socio-political processes;
Part 2: Analysis of gender aspects of professional and political career and public perceptions regarding these issues.
Part 3: Analysis of factors that impede gender equality; study of conditions that promote women’s political participation; discussion of different appearances of gender-based discrimination and possible solutions to overcome them.
